Conference 2019

What is the ÖGRL conference?

The first international conference of the ÖGRL is a three-day event which aims to bring together researchers, practitioners and anyone interested in the field to present and discuss their work in a lively, productive and supportive forum. The conference will feature paper and poster presentations on a range of topics within the vast field of legal linguistics. For more information see the call for papers here.

When and where will the ÖGRL conference take place?

The first international conference of the ÖGRL will take place from the 8th to the 10th November 2019 at the University of Vienna (Aula am Campus, University Campus, Hof 1).

Do I have to be a lawyer or a linguist to attend?

No. The conference is open for all people who are interested in the field of legal linguistics and any of its subfields. Applications will need to be relevant to the topic of the conference; guests may attend regardless of their area(s) of research.

Do I need to be a member of the ÖGRL to attend?

For our first conference, applications are open to both members and non-members. However, members of the ÖGRL will pay a reduced conference fee. Furthermore, members of the ÖGRL enjoy other benefits beyond this conference – see here for more information on membership.

How can I submit an abstract for a poster or paper presentation?

Abstracts must be sent by email to conference2019@oegrl.com by 1st July 2019. See the call for papers here for more details.

PLEASE NOTE: The submission period is over!

Is the presentation of a poster or paper a prerequisite for attendance?

No, you may still attend as a guest. The same conference fees will apply.

Does my research have to relate to German or English only?

No, the research itself is not restricted to specific languages, but the presentation itself should be held in German or English.

Can I bring my relatives or friends?

Yes, but every attendee must register (click here) and must pay the conference fee.

How can I find affordable accommodation?

How can I register for the ÖGRL conference?

Both presenters and guests will need to complete the registration form, which will be available from 1st August 2019. Once your form has been received (and your paper accepted, in the case of presenters), you will be sent information to pay your fee. Your registration is only final and complete once we have received both your completed registration form and full payment of the fee.

Click here for more information on registration.

What if my paper or poster presentation was accepted, but I cannot attend the conference?

It is possible to send someone to present in your place, if you wish. Alternatively, you may choose to present your work at the following conference (it will be automatically carried over to the next conference – you will only need to re-register for that year, your abstract will already be accepted). However, if you decide to withdraw your application, you may do so as long as you have not paid your fee. Please be aware that the conference fee is non-refundable.

When can I register for the conference?

Formal registration will start on 1st August 2019; however, you can send us an email any time to pre-register. We will then send you a reminder email with the registration form when registration opens.

Those wishing to present a paper will need to submit their abstract(s) by the 1st July 2019. They will be notified as to whether or not they are successful by 1st August 2019, when formal registration will begin.

The deadline for registration is 1st November 2019. After this point, registration may still be possible for guest listeners, but we cannot guarantee that you will get a place. Please send us an email in any case and we can see if there is still space. To avoid disappointment (and to take advantage of reduced fees), please register as early as possible.

What are the deadlines for abstract submissions?

All abstracts must be submitted by email by 1st July 2019 (emails to conference2019@oegrl.com).

PLEASE NOTE: The submission period is over!

Can I advertise the conference programme?

We welcome any offers to help advertise the conference and its programme. If you wish to do so as part of an organisation or in a publication, we ask you to first get in touch with us: conference2019@oegrl.com.

How do paper and poster presentations differ?

A paper presentation is a 20-minute presentation in front of all attendees of the conference. Presenters are encouraged to prepare a PowerPoint presentation to accompany their talk. Following the presentation, there will be 10 minutes for questions and discussion. This format tends to reach a larger audience within the conference (all attendees).

Poster presentations follow a different format. Multiple poster presentations will take place simultaneously, with presenters spaced out in the room with their posters. Conference attendees will walk from poster to poster as they choose, and presenters will talk to whoever decides to “visit” their posters. This format allows for freer, more dynamic discussion in smaller groups, and allows listeners to choose the topics they are most interested in. Some people prefer this format since it is a more informal setting than a formal paper presentation.

What are the requirements of a paper and a poster presentation?

To present a paper, presenters are encouraged to prepare a PowerPoint presentation to accompany their talk. Their talk should not exceed 20 minutes, and their PowerPoint should be formatted in such a way that it is easy for attendees to read and follow. Those who opt for a poster presentation will need to bring their poster and be prepared to stand and talk during an hour-long session. Posters should be large enough to read easily (recommended A1 or A0 format).

What services are in place for special needs and requests?

If you have certain requests or requirements (e.g. disability, dietary requirements, requests concerning the presentation), please get in touch directly with us: conference2019@oegrl.com. The conference venue is easily accessible for people with disabilities (Barrierefrei). Dietary requirements should also be given on the registration form.

How can I obtain a certificate of attendance?

All registered attendees will receive a certificate of attendance during the conference. Upon request this can also be emailed to you after the event. Confirmation of attendance is subject to your actual physical attendance at the event.

What kinds of food will be served at the conference dinner?

We are currently in the process of organising the venue for our conference dinner. We hope to provide some options to cater for different tastes and requirements. We will update our information as soon as possible.

How can my organisation become a sponsor?

If you are interested in sponsoring this event, we encourage you to get in touch with us. Depending on the nature of the sponsoring, we can offer to place your company logo on our key literature (book of abstracts, programmes, etc.) and our conference website, for example, among other possibilities. Please email us at conference2019@oegrl.com.

Can I attend as a representantive of a political party?

Since the ÖGRL is an apolitical, non-profit association, we do not accept applications from political parties. If you belong to a political party, you may attend the conference as a private person, but not as an official representative of your party. The certificate of attendance will be issued to you as an individual and not as an affiliate of your political party. However, you may attend as a representative of an academic institution or a legal entity, at the discretion of the organising committee. Please get in touch with us to discuss this: conference2019@oegrl.com.

Can I attend as a representative of a legal entity?

Attending the conference as a representative of a legal entity is possible. When registering, please include the name(s) of the representative(s) as well as the name of the legal entity being represented. Please email us in advance to discuss, since acceptance of legal entities is at the discretion of the organising committee: conference2019@oegrl.com.

How can I receive an invitation for the visa application procedure?

Please email us with your request: conference2019@oegrl.com. Please be aware that we can only issue such invitations after abstracts have been accepted and confirmed (from 1st August 2019).

Who do I contact if I have a question that is not answered here?

For all other questions please contact the organising committee: conference2019@oegrl.com.
